Success for Damian Overseas

by Mike Dunk

In whatever profession you choose, the usual starting position is at the bottom. In tennis that means campaigning on the Futures Tour to start with and Damian Hume has just returned from his foray into senior tennis having played in three Futures Tournaments on three different Indonesian Islands.

Exotic as it may sound this was hard work for the young Damian who, as a junior reached number 32 in the world, but this was a tough baptism into world of professional tennis. On the Futures Tour you are going to come across a cross section of players. Some will be “testing the waters” as to what life is like on the Tour and asking themselves, have I got it? And others will be on the come back trail from injury but have been out of the game for a while and their ranking has slipped to a point that will not give them entry into the bigger events. That is like starting all over again.

In the first event he had to qualify for the main draw, which he did. He then had a good run through to the semi finals and beat a young Indian player, with the surname of Singh, who is ranked around 550 in the world along the way. A good win and a confidence booster for young Damian. In the semi final he lost to an Australian, Colin Ebelthite, who is ranked at around 320. So a solid start for him on the Tour.

Unluckily for Damian, the decision was taken by the Tour Referee before the Tour started that regardless of your results in the first or even second tournament, no exemptions would be allowed. This meant that for Damian, despite a semi final finish in the first event, he still had to go through the rigors of qualifying for the remaining two tournaments. The upshot was that he played a lot of tennis and twice had to go for three and a half hours and once for four hours.

Taxing for anyone, let alone someone new to the Tour. His panache for being drawn against seeded players continued. Remember that at the French Juniors and Junior Wimbledon he “bumped” high seeds in the first round. Well, it continued here. In the second tournament he lost to the 6th seed in the first round. This was a man who had been up to 200 in the world but was now on the come back trail after injury. Then in the last tournament, he drew the top seed, again after qualifying.

Looking back on the tour Craig Berrenge, who accompanied Damian, said he “ was pleased with his performance in as much that he competed every single time. Perhaps he could have done a little better in the last two events but having to qualify took a lot out of him.” Just a pity that the Referees decision regarding exempt entry was made before the Tour started. It could have been all so different.

So Damian has tasted what life can be like on Tour. The experience will be invaluable and the disappointments are all part of the famous “learning curve” and I am sure he will benefit from the whole experience in the years to come.

LEAGUE UPDATES

Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS to Bedfordview B and Marks Park A for winning the mens and ladies Bundes League titles. Bedfordview’s team was comprised of “tomorrow’s generation” and tomorrows Provincial stars. How encouraging for the sponsors, Dunslaz, and the Executive to see the talent that is evident in the Province which augers well for the ensuing years ahead.

The youngsters had a nail biting finish to the League as it was not until the final doubles match that they secured victory. All credit must go to Earl Grainger for his vision and wisdom in nurturing such a young side and moulding them into a winning unit. Although they took the team honours I must mention Peter Calitz. Playing at number one for Killarney Country Club he was unbeaten in his five singles matches and if there was a prize for the Player of the league, surely, he would have taken that accolade.

Marks Park ladies strode the courts like a colossus in winning the title with ease. They were never troubled and dropped a mere 13 sets in five matches to underline their dominance.  The decision to play Bundes League at Ellis Park proved to be the correct one. The teams were able to see exactly what their opponents were doing at any given time on the other courts, and the spectators that came to cheer on their teams, all added value to the league. The standard of tennis amongst the men was very pleasing high with good and at times excellent tennis being played.

With regard to the other mens and ladies teams we are still awaiting some results before we can finalize the league positions. Will Club Representatives PLEASE, PLEASE follow this up and let us have the results. Each week Wendy has sent out the result that we have received so you can see what is outstanding from the latest communication.  If we do not receive these results, then be warned that when next years leagues are drawn up, you may find that promotion has been denied as we have not received all your results which would affect your final log standings.

JUNIORS

CONGRATULATIONS …..in a BIG way must go to Kaylea Sher on winning the National Under 18 Girls Junior title in Bloemfontein. Although Under 14, Kaylea must surely be the youngest person to win the prestigious National title and this is a tremendous feat. Seeded 9th she beat the top seed, Abigail Olivier from the Boland 46 75 63 in the final.

INTER PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT

The Senior Inter Pro is being held in Stellenbosch this week and hopefully we will be able to track the progress of our team with results on the web site. For those who missed the previous announcement our side is;

MEN; Andrew Anderson, Paul Anderson. Ndumiso Ncube and Jarred Robinson.

LADIES; Kim Rudman, Annelie van der Heever. Hayley Rudman and Fadzal Madzimamuto.

REGISTRATIONS

I know it is early to talk about the 2008 levies and a fuller letter will be sent to each club in the near future with all the details regarding payment but we feel that following the decision taken by SATA, the following should be communicated to you. As you know, levies are paid firstly to ourselves, namely Gauteng Central and included in this amount is the portion that we have to pay over to SATA. You will also know that levies have been a “bone of contention” with clubs and their members for a number of years and SATA have acknowledged this and have come up with a different structure of payment for different club players.  Now Social players, in other words those who do not play in any league competitions, will pay a smaller levy than those classed as League Players.

The new levies for 2008 are detailed below:

SATA PORTION            GCTA PORTION            TOTAL  SOCIAL

PLAYER                      R30,00                          R30,00                          R60,00

LEAGUE PLAYER        R120.00                        R110.00                        R230.00

Basically what has happened is that SATA, and we have followed this lead, have reduced the levy for Social Players. You will remember that in the past all players paid the same amount regardless of whether they played league or not. This now seems a fairer and more equitable way of levying the club members and we hope that all clubs will “buy into” this new fee structure. A more detailed letter will be sent to all club chairmen in the near future.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Congratulations to Rick de Voest on becoming the top ranked South African player on the ATP Tour. He has now moved to 124 in the world and this mainly after his second round appearance at the US Open. Wesley Moodie has slipped down the rankings to 157 and these two are currently the only South African players on the Tour.  Kevin Anderson is ranked 228 and Izak van der Merwe at 297.

The Masters Series is drawing to a close with two more events before the Masters Cup in Shanghai. The Madrid Masters begins on October 15 and this is followed by the Paris Masters which starts on October 29.  DStv will cover both these events so look in our magazine for coverage times and remember that they have new channel numbers now for sport. Tennis seems to now be on channel 205. The Masters Cup is played between the top eight players at the year end and so far those who have qualified are Roger Federer, Rafa Nadel and Novak Djokovic. Looking to qualify are Nikolay Davydenko, Andy Roddick, David Ferrer, Francisco Gonzales and James Blake who fill the next qualifying positions but the race is so close that separating Blake in 8th spot and Thomas Berdych in 13th spot are a mere 21 points. Challenging Blake for that 8th spot are Tommy Haas, Carlos Moya, Ivan Ljubicic, Tommy Robredo as well as Berdych. This must be one of the closest finishes for places in the prestigious Masters Cup on record. It will make compelling watching on television from 11 November.
