SAA National Club Champs

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS NATIONAL TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS IN EAST LONDON

The above event was held concurrently with the SAA SA Open at Selbourne Park in East London and we had the winners of Bundes and Second league representing Gauteng Central.

In the men’s Premier Division Bedfordview Country Club, the winners of our Bundes League finished third overall. They lost in the semi finals to the eventual winners, Spier from Stellenbosch. They had a power packed team in Ruan Roelofse, Robert Blair and former Davis Cup player, Pietie Norval.

The ladies from Marks Park finished fifth overall. They lost in their round robin match to the very strong Camps Bay ladies team so did not make the semi finals. The winners were the Free State University team consisting of Karin Coetzee, Michelle van Staden and Elrien de Villiers.

In the Second Division both German Club in the men and Glenvista Country Club in the ladies did exceptionally well, as they both reached the final, but sadly had to be content with the runners up spot in both. But it was a great achievement for both of our representatives to have been so near to taking the honours.

The event was run with clockwork precision and there was a tremendous amount of positive feed back from all those who took part. We would like to congratulate South African Tennis Association (SATA) in organising this wonderful event which is aimed at our club players who are the back bone of tennis in this country.

At the end of the tournament the President of SATA, Johan Koorts, said “Our tennis begins with the clubs. It is important to give the clubs incentives and to this end the SA Airways National Club Championships has played a major role in raising the standard in club tennis leagues throughout the Provinces as there is an attractive goal of qualifying for this tournament.” We hope that SATA continue with this wonderful event in the future.
