Congratulations to our under 19 Team

The under 19 South African High Schools Tennis Tournament came to an end today. Our players left Pretoria on an absolute high knowing that they had not only done their best but turned out to be one of the strongest and most successful teams there.

The overall standard of play in this year’s tournament surpassed all previous years and games were long and hard fought with many singles matches going to 3 sets. Played in a round robin format, which included singles and doubles, Gauteng Central amassed the overall highest number of points in their group.

Congratulations to all our players! We are very proud of you. Sincere thanks to Coach/Manager – Marius Masencamp for all his hard work.

Day 1 – SA High Schools

Our under 19 team fought hard (very hard!) today in tough conditions and against tough opponents. At the end of the day we beat Mpumalanga convincingly and lost in the singles to Gauteng North by only 2 points. However due to rain our doubles matches against GN have not yet been played and we are hoping that we get the chance to play them tomorrow so that we can secure a win. Our boys and girls were a credit to us today! Well done and good luck against Gauteng East tomorrow.

No Squad on 11 Feb

Please note that there will be NO SQUAD this Saturday, 11th February. The Girls High Schools committee has requested a neutral venue for their trials so that is why Ellis Park is being used. Most of the squad girls will probably be taking part in the trials as they are for Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 17’s but I am sorry that the boys have no tennis on Saturday. However, the boys will have their trials fairly soon and then the girls will have a Saturday off!!

Good luck to all the girls who take part on Saturday.

Saturday 4 Feb Squad

For squad this Saturday, 4th February, our visiting professional coach is Marius Masencamp. Marius was one of the top juniors in South Africa and now is the head coach at St Stithians which is one of the top tennis schools in the country. Marius is also the Chairman of the Gauteng Central High Schools Committee.

Greer Leo-Smith (Stevens) was a top ten singles and doubles player as well as a three-time Grand Slam Doubles winner. In 1980 Greer reached a career high singles ranking of 7 and an incredible ranking of 3 in doubles. In that year she also reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon in both singles and doubles. Greer also played for the Boston Lobsters of World Tennis fame. Greer was South African Fed Cup Captain for many years.

Please let your children either read these facts pertaining to the coaches as quite often they think they know more than the coaches! It is also important that the squad members appreciate the standard of expertise these coaches have attained and that they are fortunate to have them at Ellis Park on a Saturday.

Nicky will be here for the clothing from 9h30 till 1h30 this Saturday. Those of you who haven’t yet ordered must do so otherwise you ‘miss out’ until April/May when she will do a further ‘run’.

Gauteng Central Tennis Association wishes our Vets a safe journey and successful tournament at the ITF Seniors World Team championships which will be hosted at various venues in San Diego. Our players who are involved are : Carlos Monginho, Marco Petersen (Capt), Nozipho Sithole, Tracey Bulmer (Capt), Anthea Hurly, Bobby Favish (Capt), Clive Watkinson, Adam Myburgh and Elna Botha.

Just a quick note to remind you that the U12 and U14’s will play from 10h00 to 12h00 and the U16 and U18’s will play from 8h00 to 10h00 starting this Saturday 28th January.

Nicky will be in the tuckshop from 9h30 to 10h30 to discuss uniforms so please come in and talk to her on Saturday. Details for payment will be given to you by Nicky.

Letters for the school your child attends will be ready to hand out next week. We have found over the years that the most efficient way to do this is to give each child the letter and ask them to hand it into the school.

Gauteng Central Provincial player Jared Thompson and pupil at Sacred Heart College obtained 3 distinctions in his matric. He has been granted a tennis scholarship to the University of Alabama in the United States where he will be studying English Literature.

Well done Jared – we are so proud of you and we wish you the best of luck in the States. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing from time to time.
