Neville to take Sat Squad

Well we are back to normal again regarding the courts and we have Neville Godwin taking squad tomorrow, 26th May. Please make the effort to attend, if your school activities allow, as it will be to your advantage to work with him.

The tournaments to look out for in June and July would be the Marks Park Junior from 22 to 26th June, the Gauteng Central Keyhealth from the 3rd to 8th July which is followed by the Gauteng East Keyhealth from 9th to 14 July. We also have a Mini Series over the weekends of 21/22 and 28/29 July so there are a few tournaments to look forward to right on your doorstep!

No Squad on 12 May

I have just had a visit from Colonel JR Du Randt of the Jeppe Police Station to say that on Saturday 12th May the roads will be closed around Ellis Park from 06h00 until 13h00 for a ‘government official’s’ funeral that will take place at the Standard Bank Arena. Unfortunately I have no option but to cancel squad on Saturday as there is no way any of us will be allowed into the tennis grounds.

The following Saturday, the 19th May we will have Gaynor coming to take squad, plus Greer is back so I look forward to seeing you all then.

My apologies but I’m sure you understand that the situation is beyond my control.

Squad – 5 May

Squad goes ‘back to normal’ from this Saturday 5^th May with the normal times for U12 and 14’s at 10h00 and U16 and 18’s at 08h00. I look forward to seeing all of you back after the holidays.

Our 2012 U18 Interpro side came 4th overall in the A section which was a good result considering the injuries to Bjorn and Aidan. Congratulations to Michelle Erasmus, Kelly Goosen, Caitlin Herb, Imaan Hassim, Tremayne Mitchell, Keegan Sullivan, Juan-Philip van Antwerpen and Shaquille de Jager. Once again Clive was most impressed by their tennis and their attitude both on and off the court. I should like to thank Caitlin, Imaan, Juan-Philip and Shaquille for agreeing to play at the last minute due to withdrawals. They certainly did Gauteng Central proud. Well done to all of them.

Ellis Park welcomes you on Saturday

I am sorry I have been so hard to get hold of but with the SA Open Wheelchair tournament starting tomorrow I haven’t had a chance to do anything but run around in circles!

Ellis Park is looking wonderful – clean and spick and span and I urge you to pop down over the weekend to see the top 100 players in the world. They are here from Japan, U.K, Holland, Germany, USA, America, SA and more.

As you all know there is no squad tomorrow and unfortunately no squad again over the long weekend of 28th April. We are not able to take part in the Gauteng North Team Challenge from 28th April to 30th April in Pretoria because we either send all teams e.g. U12,14, 16 girls and boys (24 players) or non at all. I just cannot fill every age group so we will have to miss out this time. They assure me that next year it won’t be scheduled over a long weekend and will not clash with other junior tournaments. For those of you who responded positively, thank you and I am sorry if you are disappointed but there is always a ‘next time’.

I look forward to seeing some of you tomorrow – play starts at 09h00.

Ellis Park to host Wheelchair Tournament

Johannesburg, South Africa – The grand old lady of South African tennis, Ellis Park Tennis Stadium in the City of Joburg is gearing herself up for a bumper week of tennis.

Wheelchair Tennis South Africa are just three days away from hosting the Airports Company South Africa, SA Open, the country’s premier wheelchair tennis event which forms part of the international circuit. The tournament will be held from 21 – 25 April 2012. This Grade 1 tour event has attracted a top entry from overseas and will allow all the local players an opportunity of gaining all important world ranking points and a chance of qualifying for the London Paralympics in August.

Already confirmed as entered are South African’s top ranked men and women’s players Lucas Sithole (world ranked 9 in the Quads Division) and Kgothatso Montjane (world ranked 10 in the Women’s Division). They will be joined by international stars representing Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Scotland, Japan, Poland, Sri Lanka, Germany, Netherlands, France, Brazil, China, Malaysia and Israel. Notable players that have entered include world number 4, Marjolein Buis and world number 9, Sharon Walraven both of the Netherlands in the women’s division. In the men’s division there will be three players ranked in the top 20 of the world namely Scotland’s Gordon Reid (12), Ben Weekes of Australia (15) and Japanese star, Yoshinobu Fujimoto (17). In the Quad’s, Andrew Lapthorne of Great Britain is ranked no 4 and Maro Innocenti of Italy, ranked no 10 join Lucas Sithole all ranked in the world’s top 10.

“Ellis Park is a truly historic venue and will be a fitting wheelchair friendly host for the tournament” said Tournament Director Holger Losch. “The venue has played host to top ATP, WTA and ITF events including Davis and Fed Cup and now that our ACSA SA Open is being played at Ellis Park we can honestly say this “grand old lady” has hosted the best of all tennis events.” Losch continued by saying that preparations were well on track to host a truly memorable tournament. “We have been hard at work in making sure Ellis Park will be a warm and hospitable host. The courts are in good shape and the facilities have been well adapted for the players. After successfully hosting the World Wheelchair Tennis Championships last year, we feel in tune to host a great weeks tennis in the City of Gold. “

The tournament will have a Men’s, Women’s, Quads and Junior division each comprising of a singles and doubles draw. The tournament draw takes place on Friday at 18h00 at the Reef Hotel in Joburg with the opening round starting at 09h00 on Saturday morning. Round two is scheduled for Sunday, the quarter finals for Monday, semi-finals on Tuesday and the finals on Wednesday.

New Term

Well the holidays are over for some and the lucky ones are still enjoying themselves. I don’t know what sort of attendance we will have tomorrow but this is just a reminder that squad will be as usual, 14^th April – U16 and U18’s from 08h00 to 10h00 and the U12’s and 14’s from 10h00 to 12h00.

It doesn’t look as though we aregoing to be able to participate in the Gauteng North Team Challenge for U12, U14 and U16 boys and girls from 28^th April to 30^th April in Pretoria. Mainly because of this being over a long weekend I have only had 4 positive responses to my email!! However, I’ll make a final decision after the first squad practice and let you know.

I do hope you are enjoying the holidays and either taking a well earned rest or playing the various tournaments available to you.

Gauteng Central has been invited to take part in the Gauteng North Team Challenge for U12, U14 and U16 boys and girls from 28th April to 30th April in Pretoria. This is a long weekend and because of that I am asking those of you who are available and wish to be considered for the teams to please let me know by Friday 13th April. I need to send through T-shirt sizes of the players selected so do let me know asap. Selection will be made by Saturday 14th April at the first squad practice.
