Learning from the Best

Once again we are very fortunate in having Neville Godwin as the visiting professional coach this Saturday, 18th February.  For those of you who do not know Neville’s history he turned professional (as a player) in 1994.  Two years later Neville reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a qualifier. 1997 he reached his highest individual ranking on the ATP Tour of 90 in the world in singles and 57 in doubles.  He retired from his professional career in 2004 and after coaching in England returned to South Africa where he coaches at the Wanderers Club.

The other professional coach will be Greer Leo-Smith who as you already know was a top ten singles and doubles players as well as a three time Grand Slam doubles winner. She reached a singles ranking of 7 in the world and a ranking of 3 in doubles.

I wonder how many young players on a Saturday morning are lucky enough to share the court with two coaches who have played at Wimbledon and spent many years playing the ATP world tour and are available to give you their time and expertise.

Nicky will be available for any clothing queries between 09h30 and 10h30 so should you need to order or pay, please make the effort to see her during these times.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

The under 19 South African High Schools Tennis Tournament came to an end today. Our players left Pretoria on an absolute high knowing that they had not only done their best but turned out to be one of the strongest and most successful teams there.

The overall standard of play in this year’s tournament surpassed all previous years and games were long and hard fought with many singles matches going to 3 sets.  Played in a round robin format, which included singles and doubles, Gauteng Central amassed the overall highest number of points in their group i.e. GC, GN, GE and Mpumalanga.

Congratulations to all our players! We are very proud of you. Sincere thanks to Coach/Manager – Marius Masencamp for all his hard work.
