The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced on Tuesday that they had awarded Tennis South Africa (TSA) with another international ranking junior tennis event.
The tournament, to be called the The Axnosis ITF, will be played at the iconic Brooklyn Union Tennis Club from Monday 27 February to finals day, Saturday 4 March 2017.
The ITF confirmed that the tournament would be a Grade 3 status event on the global ITF junior calendar making it the highest status event of the seven international junior events played in the country.
Boys and Girls in the under 18 age group from all over the world are expected to fly into the country’s Capital for the week long tournament which will have valuable world ranking points up for grabs.
TSA confirmed that former world number 6 and Grand Slam quarterfinalist Annette Du Plooy (nee Van Zyl) would be the Tournament Director. “I have always believed in South African tennis, so this announcement of a tournament at my home club, Brooklyn Union is very special for me. I have been a long standing member of Brooklyn Union, one of the oldest clubs in Pretoria, and it’s fantastic that the club through their Chairperson, Judy Duvenhage, had the vision and desire to host an international junior event” said Du Plooy.
Du Plooy also said that the sponsor, software giant Axnosis needed to be applauded for investing into the development of tennis. “Axnosis started their love affair with tennis firstly through assisting our club championships and at the recently held Davis Cup tie, South Africa vs Estonia at Irene Country Club. After enjoying their partnership with Brooklyn Union and TSA, they agreed to sponsor this prestigious junior event which will help develop our up and coming players in enabling them to earn work ranking points and improve their positions on the ITF world ranking by playing competitive tennis in their own back yard.”
