Two of out of two for SA Fed Cup Team

The South African Fed Cup team won their second consecutive round-robin tie in Montenegro on Tuesday. Playing in the Euro Africa Group III tournament in Ulcinj, South Africa thumped their African counterparts Kenya 3-0 to remain unbeaten in Pool B-A.

On the opening day Monday, South Africa beat hosts Montenegro 2-1.

It was a dominant performance by South Africa who lost only 7 games in the 6 sets played against a depleted Kenyan outfit.

Katie Poluta continued to impress when the South African number two went out first for South Africa and was off court in a short 53 minutes beating Judith Muraa, 6-1 6-0.

Poluta was very happy with her back to back wins. “I have had a really great time and good run in Montenegro so far. It’s exciting to play in my first Fed Cup and the team spirit has been wonderful. I have been made so welcome. Playing US College tennis has prepared me well for Fed Cup. I am really excited for the rest of the week and the future of tennis in South Africa.”

It was then the turn of Chanel Simmonds the South African number who gave her country victory over the Kenyans when she beat Angella Okutoyi, 6-2 6-2 to give South Africa a 2-0 lead.

In the final rubber of the tie, captain Rene Plant decided to give debutante Minette van Vreden the opportunity to play the dead rubber with experienced doubles specialist Madrie Le Roux. The South Africans easily disposed of Faith Nyabera Omurunga and Judith Muraa 6-1 6-1 in less than an hour to give South Africa the all-important 3-0 victory.

Van Vreden of Boland who is 19 years of age, felt honoured to go out on court. “It was a great honour to go out with Madrie and play the doubles rubber. It’s my first Fed Cup and playing my first rubber for South Africa was a proud moment.” Van Vreden will be taking up a tennis scholarship in the USA in August.

Rene Plant was pleased with her teams overall performance against Kenya. “The players refocused after beating Montenegro on Monday for today’s tie and won in a business-like manner. Our mind-set is one ball and one point at a time.”

On Wednesday South Africa will face their toughest challenge in the group when they battle against top seeds Finland. Finland, like South Africa are unbeaten in the pool.
