SA National Champions crowned

on

The final day of the Growthpoint Junior Nationals came to an exciting conclusion in Mangaung on Monday and it was the Free State pair of Delien Kleinhans and Joubert Klopper who claimed top honours in the U/18 category.
Kleinhans was up against Gauteng Central’s Tamsin Hart and played dazzling tennis to win the match 6-1 6-1. In the boy’s final, Klopper was leading 6-3 3-0 against Western Province’s Pierre Malan, when Malan unfortunately had to retire due to injury, leaving Klopper to be crowned champion.
Both Kleinhans and Klopper then also went on to clinch the girls U/18 and Boys U/18 doubles titles, respectively, to each clinch a unique Nationals ‘double crown’.
In other results, Korona Rugara (Gauteng Central) rallied back in the girls U/12 final, after dropping the first set, to win 4-6 6-2 6-2 against Danielle Chapman (Gauteng East). Leigh van Zyl from the Winelands region also had to dig deep in the girls U/16 showpiece match to beat Gauteng Central’s Sarah Millard 3-6, 6-4,7-5.
Carl Roothman, also from the Winelands region, survived a closely contested battle against Devin Badenhorst, from Gauteng North, to lift the boys under 16 singles title.
Meanwhile Leonardo Sola (Winelands) and Carle Botha (Gauteng North) secured the boys and girls under 14 singles titles, respectively.
