The courts may be the same but the people using tennis facilities in South Africa are increasingly different.
Whether an overspill from the apartheid era or a view fuelled by the realities of modern life, the perception of tennis within South Africa, according to National Association chief executive Richard Glover, remains one of elitism.
“South Africa is an emerging economy. There is a juxtaposition between First World and Third World – we have elements of both – and there is massive disparity between rich and poor in our country,” said Glover, expanding on the issue at the 2018 ITF Worldwide Participation Conference at Stamford Bridge, London.
