South African tennis ace Lloyd Harris becomes the first qualifier to reach the semifinals of the Dubai ATP 500 Championships with upset win over former world number 4, Kei Nishikori of Japan.
Harris beat Nishikori 6-1 3-6 6-3 in 1 hour and 37 minutes.
Harris won the first five games with two consecutive breaks in the second and fourth games and served out the first set at love.
Nishikori turned around the match in the second set by breaking twice to open up a 4-0 lead.
Harris pulled back one of the two breaks in the fifth game, but Nishikori held his final two service games to seal the second set 6-3.
Harris saved two break points in the first and seventh games of the third set, before breaking serve in the eighth game when Nishikori overhit a forehand.
“I have a few matches under my best now. It’s starting to feel like my home court. I am really enjoying it out here and played really well on the break points in the third set”, said Harris.
Harris will now play Canadian 3 seed, Denis Shapovalov for a place in the final.
The match will be broadcast on SuperSport on Friday at 15h00 SA time.
